Agora Energiewende’s funding extended until 2021

Agora funders, Stiftung Mercator and European Climate Foundation, committed to follow-up financing

Agora Energiewende’s existence is now guaranteed until the end of 2021: The current financing phase ending in March 2017 will be followed by a further phase, which will initially continue until 2021. This was recently decided by Agora Energiewende’s shareholders – Stiftung Mercator and European Climate Foundation. The second phase will receive the same funding as the first phase from 2012 to 2017, 15 million euros. Accordingly, the foundations provide Agora Energiewende with an annual budget of roughly three million euros. This will be used to finance the 20 employees, the research activities and events.

The decision to continue to provide funding is based on a comprehensive evaluation performed by the New Climate Institute last year, which rated Agora Energiewende’s work positively. Accordingly, Agora Energiewende’s fundamental orientation and modus operandi will remain largely unchanged.

“The early decision to extend funding is a major vote of confidence for us,” says Agora Energiewende Executive Director Dr Patrick Graichen. “We are delighted about it, and will continue to do our utmost to make the energy transition in Germany a success in the years to come. We are also seeing many countries around the world about to make the transition to a carbon-free energy industry. European and international cooperation will be a new focus for our work. We have strengthened this area significantly in recent months.”
