The role of green hydrogen towards net zero emissions
At the launch ceremony of Korea's Green Hydrogen Forum on 2 February 2021, Agora Energiewende's CEO Patrick Graichen spoke in his keynote address about the role - and limits - of hydrogen on the path to climate neutrality.
There are three types of hydrogen according to the emissions produced: green, blue, and turquoise. Only green hydrogen made from renewable electricity is truly zero-carbon. While hydrogen will be crucial (perhaps even irreplaceable) in closing some gaps toward climate neutrality, H2 will not be used in all applications that currently run on liquid and gaseous fossil fuels. Rather, all applications that can switch to electricity will be electrified with green power. Hydrogen will then play a role in the remaining applications where electrification is less effective, especially in industry. Patrick Graichen explains.
