The race for carbon-neutrality has started to both achieve the Paris Agreement and reap the benefits of greening the economies. Major economic powers such as the United States, the European Union, China, Japan, South Korea as well as developing countries such as Chile, Brazil, and South Africa have pledged for carbon and climate neutrality by mid-century.
Will Indonesia – the largest nation in Southeast Asia – be the first country in the region to declare carbon-neutrality by mid-century? If so, how can Indonesia build a society that does not rely on coal and oil? Agora Energiewende, together with IESR and Lappeenranta-Lahti University of Technology (LUT) analysed several pathways for Indonesia to reduce its GHG emissions towards achieving a carbon-neutral energy system by 2050.
At this event, IESR presented a vision of zero emissions in the Indonesian energy sector by 2050 and key strategies. The discussion was enriched by inputs from Agora Energiewende on the global race to zero emissions and from LUT on a modelling framework in a high renewables system. Additonally, renowned panelists discussed how these strategies are aligned and also the necessary next steps to accelerate the implementation of action to reach zero emissions by mid of this century.
Simultaneous interpretation was provided in English and Indonesian.
